Car Adaptations: What Grants are Available?

Since the Motability scheme was launched in 1978, it has helped more than three million people, providing car adaptations, scooters and powered wheelchairs. The scheme means precious independence and enables disabled people to get out and about and live their lives to the full. Ransome Mobility is a registered Motability installer, and provides vehicles tailored to customers’ needs, with 12-month warranties for every adaptation carried out and free annual checks.

Ransome Mobility has a demonstration vehicle designed to show people its full range of products, ranging from hoists and lifts to push-pull hand controls. You can either see the vehicle at the firm’s Suffolk showroom, or Ransome Mobility can come to you if this is more convenient. The firm offers car adaptations to customers in Essex, Norfolk, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, Northampton and Hertfordshire.

The Motability Scheme stops disabled people from being stranded in their own homes. It means they can lease vehicles that are expertly adapted to their own abilities, and together with insurance, servicing and maintenance, have a package which is geared to take the worry out of motoring. Ransome Mobility are experts in this field and we will ensure that your vehicle is suited to your individual requirements.

What Is the Motability Scheme? People with disabilities can use all or part of their Government-funded mobility allowance to rent a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair suited to their own requirements. Adaptations can be carried out to ensure that you are able to drive comfortably and safely in a car or wheelchair-accessible vehicle which is properly kitted out for you.

How Did It Come About? Most British households had cars by the mid-1970s, but many disabled people were being left out, either with no transport at all or with just a mobility trike, which could not take passengers and wasn’t geared to everybody’s individual needs. To improve this situation, a mobility allowance was introduced in 1976, giving funding which people with disabilities could use to pay for the sort of transport they required, whether this was a specially adapted scooter, car or powered wheelchair.

However, it soon became apparent that the allowance was just the start, and more needed to be done to ensure that whatever their abilities, drivers could actually get vehicles suited to their needs at an affordable price. The Motability scheme was therefore founded in 1977 and officially launched in 1978, set up as a charity in partnership with the Government. The scheme currently helps more than 600,000 people in the UK, enabling them to access education and employment and take part in all kinds of activities which would not otherwise be possible for them.

How Do I Become Eligible? There are several different mobility allowances available for people with disabilities, and those who receive one of the higher or enhanced rates of allowance may be eligible for the scheme. Parents and guardians of children aged over three who receive one of these allowances can also apply.

As a disabled person, you don’t have to be a driver yourself to be eligible for the Motability scheme. If you can’t drive yourself, you can nominate up to two people to act as your drivers, who must live nearby. And it is also possible to add a third driver, although there will be an extra cost for this. To check whether you are eligible, contact the Department for Work and Pensions for more details, or if you are an Armed Forces veteran you can visit the Veterans UK website for help.

How Does it Work? When you have checked that you are eligible to lease a vehicle under the Motability scheme, the next step is to choose a vehicle suitable for you, bearing in mind cost, the types of journey you are intending to make, and also how the vehicle can be adapted to suit your needs.

Ransome Mobility is a registered Motability installer and will help you to make the right choices, providing a specialist service which will take into account your individual requirements. Our Motability demonstration vehicle features a whole range of car adaptations, including steering balls, infra-red controls, swivel seats, the Carony drive system which will allow you to drive from your wheelchair, and many more ideas tailored to different individuals.

Once you have chosen your vehicle, we will complete your order with you and you will then be given an estimated delivery time. The Motability service also provides a package including insurance and breakdown insurance, as well as servicing and maintenance, and you can be provided with a new vehicle every three years.
