Car Adaptations – Hand Assistance

Steering Wheel Knobs and Balls are available to help people who are unable to grip or control the steering wheel. They lock on to the steering wheel easily and improve the driver’s control of the car. At Ransome Mobility we have vast experience in fitting these devices in a wide range of makes and models of vehicles. Our experience means that we can advise on the best devices and options tailored to individual needs. The balls can be easily removed when the car is being driven by a driver without impairments.

Car Adaptations – Foot Assistance

Push & Pull Hand Controls
For drivers who cannot operate foot controls, push and pull hand controls can be used in place of pedals in automatic vehicles. They are very easy to use – you just pull the control towards you to accelerate and release to slow down. To brake you just move it away from you. We can fit these car adaptations into most vehicles, tailored to the vehicle and to your needs. Unlike many push and pull systems we fit our control systems inside the steering column, rather than the outside which can impede manoeuvrability. This gives the driver more space and makes it easier for able bodied people to drive the car as well.

Left Foot Accelerators
The left foot accelerator is a car adaptation to enable drivers to use the accelerator with their left foot by positioning it to the left of the brake pedal. There are various models available and we can advise the best option for you and ensure that it is fitted safely.

Car Adaptations – Strength and Mobility Assistance

Easy Release Hand Brake
The easy release handbrake is designed for people with limited hand strength who need assistance operating the handbrake. It moves the handbrake closer to the user and makes it easier to use. There are standard attachments available for most makes and models of car and to suit most disabilities, however if these don’t fit your needs we can recommend other options.

Easy Release Gearshift
People with hand mobility issues who need assistance changing gears in manual cars will benefit from the easy release gearshift. This device fits onto the gear stick and enables gears to be selected with ease and without using a lot of strength.

Swivel Seats

Swivel seats enable drivers or passengers to easily get in and out of the car. The seats rotate towards the door and therefore provide easy access in and out of the vehicle. Swivel seats are available as manually operated or automatic. The manually operated swivel seat is operated using a lever that rotates the seat towards the door when it is released. The automatic option is operated by the touch of a button, rather than using a lever and is ideal for those with limited manoeuvrability.

Wireless Keypad Controls
People who have difficulty reaching or otherwise operating standard controls such as indicators, headlights or windscreen wipers will benefit from the wireless keypad controls. The control panel is fitted to the steering wheel and it is designed so that buttons are easy to identify and select.

Car Adaptations – Wheelchair Drivers

Carony Drive System
The Carony Drive System is ideal for drivers who are also wheelchair users and enables users to drive their vehicles from their wheelchairs. It is a powered wheelchair with a seat that can be adjusted to allow the driver to sit in the best position to drive the vehicle. The vehicle is accessed using a wheelchair ramp or lift and then the wheelchair is locked into place according to ISO crash safety standards. The seat is lowered to the best position and the foot rests move forward to enable the knees to get out of the way of the steering wheel. The system is compact and takes up only a small amount of room inside the vehicle. When being used as a normal wheelchair outside the vehicle, it operates as normal using a joystick. It is only 64.5cm wide and therefore easy to manoeuvre. We can advise you on the suitability of your vehicle and carry out the installation and any necessary tests.
