How to Get the Most Out of Your Summer Holiday with WAVs

Used WAVs norfolk

The summer months are the perfect opportunity for holidays and trips around the area in your wheelchair access vehicle.

As leading suppliers of nearly new and used WAVs in Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex, Ransome Mobility are keen to help wheelchair users to get out and about and enjoy the summer. Here is our guide to make sure you get the most out of your holiday this summer.

Before You Go

Before heading off on holiday, it is vital to check in advance what the facilities for wheelchair users are, not just where you are staying but also the places you intend to visit. These days online booking is increasingly outstripping the traditional method of reserving a holiday by phone or visiting a travel agent. However, if you can’t find what you are looking for on the website, such as details of specific facilities and deals offered for carers, then calling by phone is a good idea. It’s also often possible to find out details by phone which have been left off a website, and check exactly what is available.

Remember that under the 2010 Equality Act owners of tourist attractions and accommodation have to make reasonable adjustments to ensure people with disabilities are not discriminated against. This includes providing suitable steps and stairs, hearing loops, doors, signs and toilets.

Parking availability is another thing to check before setting off wherever possible. There is no statutory requirement under the Equality Act to provide a specific number of disabled parking spaces next to buildings which require public access. However, the BSI does recommend that a certain percentage should be made available to people with mobility issues, and that they should be close to the building. You will also want to check that the spaces are big enough to ensure wheelchair access to and from your car.

If you are visiting somewhere small or out of the way it may be more difficult for the owners to make the necessary changes; but the more popular summer sites and accommodation should have better access arrangements.

Information on Access

Having a satnav in your wheelchair access vehicle can be very helpful. Not only will it cut down on delays to your destination by flagging up any roadworks or traffic jams, but it could also tell you where the nearest disabled parking space is. Some types of satnav can store a database of Blue Badge parking bays and tell you which public toilets are accessible and which petrol stations are disabled-friendly.

There are also number of schemes which provide valuable yardsticks for the wheelchair user. VisitEngland, for instance, always provides an Accessibility Guide when it assesses accommodation and attractions. This covers all aspects of accessibility from the number of steps to the accommodation’s front door to where the nearest accessible parking space is.

There is also a National Accessible Scheme. This assessment looks at how well equipped visitor accommodation is for the disabled user, measuring the number of handrails, ramps, low-level access showers and other, similar items it has.

Other websites which give information on disability access include Open Britain and DisabledGo. All these guides should help you to plan your summer holiday with confidence.

Activity Holidays for Wheelchair Users

Users of WAVs need not be restricted in their choice of holidays. Increasing numbers of companies are providing a specialist holiday service for wheelchair users, including outdoor holidays with the emphasis on activity. These include fishing and boating holidays, some of which are on Britain’s most picturesque canals and waterways. Cycling trips, with adapted bikes, and adventure holidays are also available for those who like to enjoy the fresh air during the summer.

Carers are not forgotten either, as some companies offer respite breaks as part of their packages and some offer special deals for carers accompanying someone with a disability. The foreign holiday market is also improving in terms of access.
